Preventing Sexual Assault and Dating Violence

A top concern for parents is whether their sons and daughters are safe. With a goal of keeping students safe, University Health Services, in collaboration with the End Violence on Campus (EVOC) initiative and the Division of Student Life, has developed an interactive program for first-year students.

The program, “Tonight,” educates students about consent, sexual assault, and dating violence, and gives students tools to safely intervene in potentially unsafe situations, prevent perpetration of these crimes, and help friends who have experienced sexual assault or dating violence.

The program presents a realistic scenario: a typical night out with friends. But the group is then faced with difficult situations to which they must respond. By the program’s conclusion, students will have learned multiple ways to deal with sexual assault and dating violence.

Help us prevent violence on campus by asking your student if he or she has completed this program, which is available on your student’s learn@uw. If you would like to view the program, a public version is available at the End Violence on Campus website.

It’s important for parents to be knowledgeable about the resources available here on campus. You can learn how to respond if a student does disclose an experience of sexual assault or dating violence to you, or view a complete list of services available to victims online.

By encouraging your student to watch “Tonight” and familiarizing yourself with the helpful resources here on campus, you are helping your student achieve something you can both agree on: a safe and fun experience at UW–Madison.
