Purchasing Texbooks

Students buy textbooks from a variety of bookstores. Many textbooks are made available at University Book Store and Underground Textbook Exchange, both of which are located near campus.

To find the appropriate textbooks for their classes, students will need their class schedules, including the section number for each course. Textbooks are generally arranged according to course and section number. Currently, both book stores listed above have fall 2007 textbooks available for purchase online, however some faculty do not release their list of course materials until just before classes begin. Textbooks may be purchased anywhere, but it is important to verify that you are purchasing the correct edition. Also, if purchasing textbooks online, be sure to allow time for shipping.

Keep in mind that there may be “required” materials as well as “recommended” materials, so it can be advantageous to wait until after the first day of class before purchasing textbooks. Many classes do not require reading before the first class. If reading is required, typically the student is notified in advance.

Please note that both book stores listed above are private companies that are not affiliated with UW–Madison.
